Tuned in... with Breakfast DJ Emma Saint

Summer may seem like a long way off, but organisers of music festivals in the county including Canterbury’s Lounge on the Farm and Hevy Fest at Port Lympne are beginning to announce their headline acts.

I am really excited by the line-up announced so far for the Sound Island Music Festival at Quex Park, with stars including Rita Ora and Plan B.

I went to my first festival last year – V Festival – and had a great time, despite torrential rain on the last day. I am a big animal print fan, and I can’t wait to pack up my zebra tent, don my zebra wellies and get along to some of Kent’s events. Hopefully we will have a lovely summer and I won’t need the wellies!

Trying to be a nice ice baby

Having only lived in Kent for about six months, I’m trying to do as many things as possible within the area, and I have just embarked upon my latest project – ice skating lessons!

I have signed up for a six-week course at Silver Blades ice rink in Gillingham, in the hope of being at least being able to make it around the whole rink once at the end.

Before I turned up to my first lesson, I was really nervous, like a child on the first day of school. I didn’t know what to expect, and worried that I would be the worst one there. But as soon as I arrived, I realised I wasn’t the only one who seemed to be a tad wobbly - and didn’t want to let go of the barrier! But our coach Nicky soon coaxed us away from the edge, and even showed us how to touch our toes on the ice and go backwards!

During a break I watched some of the other more experienced skaters, who were able to perform some impressive moves, doing what looked like 100 turns in a minute, jumping backwards and even the splits! Back on the ice, I decided to have a go at a twirl, but to my dismay as I went to turn I skidded two feet in the air and landed with a nasty smack on the floor. More of a beached whale than a graceful swan! I may not be quite ready for Dancing on Ice, but it hasn’t put me off.

I’m continuing the lessons and I will be showing off my moves in the Broadway Ice Show at Gillingham ice rink on Sunday, April 14. If you fancy coming along, tickets are £5, available at Silver Blade’s reception, or by calling them on 01634 388477.
