Singer Karen Carpenter, many believe, had a voice of an angel and had it all.
But behind her seemingly perfect life and public persona lay a devastating secret that would ultimately lead to her early death in 1983 at the age of just 32.
With her brother Richard she provided the soundtrack to the 1970s with hauntingly beautiful songs such as Close to You, Please Mr Postman, Only Yesterday and We’ve Only Just Begun.
Despite her early death, she is included in Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest singers of all time. Featuring many classic and familiar Carpenters’ songs, Yesterday Once More: The Karen Carpenter Story tells the journey of Karen Carpenter’s musical achievements and her long and unsuccessful battle with anorexia.
The memorable and moving show is performed by accomplished musicians Rebecca Robinson and Mark Heller, and their intimate piano and voice arrangements showcase the duo’s songs in all their poignant beauty.
The show comes to the Gulbenkian in Canterbury on Friday, December 7 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12 in advance or £10 for students and £15 on the door and £12 for students on the door.
