Fire crews tackle blaze in yard at Westwood Cross shopping centre in Thanet

Smoke billowed over Westwood Cross this afternoon as firefighters tackled a blaze.

Crews were called to the Thanet shopping centre at 12.40pm amid a fire in a service yard.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said a fence, fibre glass outbuilding and bushes were alight.

It took firefighters from Margate station around 30 minutes to put out the blaze.

Shoppers reported smoke billowing over shops, but the centre did not need to be evacuated.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
