Tributes paid to 'hero' school worker from Royal Harbour Academy in Ramsgate who has died from cancer

The keen cyclist managed the school's exams and was also a mentor to students, who in an emotional video on social media described him as their "hero".

Head teacher Simon Pullen said in a letter to parents and pupils that while it was known Mr Gough was fighting cancer, his death still came as a shock.

"He will be greatly missed by us all," he said.

"Martin was a valuable member of the school staff who brought his formidable intellect and caring nature to everything he did.

"While he managed all of the school’s processes and procedures around examinations, he also took time to mentor and support a wide range of students outside the classroom.

"While I have passed on the school’s condolences to Martin’s wife and family, I am sure that staff and many of our students will want to take part in a memorial activity for Martin once the school has returned from lockdown."

Former pupil Chardonnay Nicholson has set up a group for pupils to pay tribute to Mr Gough.

She says he was one of the happiest, helpful, kind and caring people at Royal Harbour Academy.

"He helped many students that were struggling and always had a positive outcome for their problems," she said.

"He was one of the biggest blessings to our school, especially with his big smile that lit up the school.

Another pupil said: "It's devastating to hear that Mr Gough has sadly passed.

"You were such a joyful person and always put people first no matter what.

"Whenever I saw you, you’d always have a massive smile on your face or you’d be laughing, and you were always helping a student.

"I can’t thank you enough for always helping me and getting me through my exam - I couldn’t have done it without you.

"You may be gone Mr Gough, but never forgotten."

In another emotional tribute, a pupil said everyone would miss him dearly.

"We have lost someone with greatness but heaven gains the brightest star," she added.

"We all love and miss you."

Student Lauren Strich is planning a bike ride in his memory.

"Most individuals who know him will remember how much he loves his bikes," she said.

"I've decided to do a bike ride to show our respect and how much he meant to us all. Anyone is welcome to join me after lockdown. "

Money raised through the ride will go towards a memorial bench and any left over given to Mr Gough's family.
