Fire in fields in Margate as firefighters tackle corn fire off Broadley Road

A huge blaze in a corn field is being investigated after 10 hectares went up in flames last night.

Firefighters were called to the incident in Margate shortly after midnight and spent two hours battling the fire.

Crews in five fire engines were sent to the scene with the field well alight and flames spreading across the field.

The cut corn in the field off Broadley Road was burning and sending plumes of smoke into the air.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus also used two all-terrain vehicles to help tackle the fire along with using a hose reel jet, a fog spike and beaters to put out the fire.

A fire service spokesman said: "No casualties were reported and the cause has not yet been established."

Police were also called to the fire to support fire crews with road closures.

It has not been confirmed whether the cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious but it is still under investigation.
