PureGym launches bid to transform Broadstairs Poundstretcher

A bid has been launched to transform a discount store into Thanet’s first PureGym.

The fitness firm wants to open the branch at Poundstretcher’s current base at Westwood Retail Park in Broadstairs.

It has lodged proposals with the district council this month to move into the site – with the facility expected to welcome keep-fitters by early 2023 at the latest.

Bosses believe the new fitness centre will have about 4,500 members, while employing up to 16 members of staff.

A spokesman told KentOnline: “We can confirm our plans to open a brand new PureGym in Broadstairs towards the end of the year.

“We saw a gap in the market and a huge appetite for affordable, flexible fitness in Broadstairs, which makes this such a fantastic new location for PureGym.

“The state-of-the-art gym will offer members fixed-pin and free weights, group exercise classes, access to our personal trainers and much more. It’s early days but we’re already excited to welcome new members to PureGym Broadstairs.”

Currently the nearest branch of the chain, which has more than 330 sites across the country, is a 30-minute drive away in Canterbury.

Planning papers show PureGym is hoping to make a series of minor alterations – like replacing the main entrance doors and installing nine air conditioning units – to the Poundstretcher prior to opening.

Officials say the Westwood Road facility will operate for 24 hours a day throughout the week, and will remain open while unstaffed.

It is understood the chain will exchange contracts for the building with its landlord - rather than Poundstretcher - shortly.

PureGym’s website says the branch is “coming soon”, and offers customers the chance to register their interest in becoming a member.

Poundstretcher, which is still trading at the site, did not respond to requests for comment.
