Six months of roadworks on Sittingbourne's St Michael's Road

Motorists are preparing for six months of disruption as roadworks set to last six months begin on one of the main routes into a town.

The works will be on the one-way section of St Michael’s Road in Sittingbourne, between London Road and Dover Street.

They will begin on Monday, June 10 and due to finish in December this year.

Work will take place in two stages, on each side of the road. This will mean a single lane will remain open throughout the works period, allowing traffic to flow through.

The road will be converted to a single-lane route permanently following the works, which are related to the power network cables underneath the roads, supporting the new Bourne Place leisure quarter.

The road will then be resurfaced after completion.

Shops and businesses will remain open as usual.

Access to Cockleshell Walk Car Park will be maintained, though will result in a temporary reduction in the number of parking spaces.

The roadworks are part of the Spirit of Sittingbourne regeneration scheme, which will deliver £326million of investment into the town over the next 10 years.

A Spirit spokesman said: "Our contractors will ensure that a single lane through the impacted area is maintained during daylight hours.

"The maintaining of the single lane will minimise the impact of the works – they may, however, lead to slight delays in and around the area.

"We are therefore advising residents and commuters to build an additional time into their journeys."
