Fire crew fights 40ft farm blaze

by Hayley Robinson

A farmer has thanked fire crews who helped tackle a blaze on his land.

At its height, up to 50 firefighters were dealing with the incident in four, single-storey farm buildings at Conyer Farm, Conyer Road, Conyer.

It is believed it started in one of the middle units just before 8.15pm on Saturday.

Stored inside were tractors, a van and a forklift truck.

A series of small explosions led residents to believe there was a firework display in the area.

It was only when people went outside to investigate that they saw flames up to 40ft high.

A height vehicle and a water unit were used by crews as they battled the flames for more than an hour.

They left the scene at 10pm but were called back after 8am the following day after fire hotspots were found in the same unit.

Kent Fire & Rescue Service’s urban search and rescue team were called in to remove an outer wall. They then made the building safe for firefighters to enter so they could damp down the area.

They finally left at 1.40pm.

Farmer Paul Dixon said: "I thought the firefighters acted in a very professional way and did a very good job and I would like to thank them.

"We don’t know the cause at the moment," he added.
