Children were given a cookery masterclass on how to create a classic Great British dish.
Six youngsters served up tasty helpings of cottage pie in a lesson run by community chef, Mike Spackman.
The session was held at St Edwards primary in New Road, Sheerness, as part of a healthy food programme funded by Kent County Council.
Having cooked their pie, children took it home to share with at least one family member.
The little chefs were also taught about food hygiene and how to store and reheat dishes safely.
Mike said mince used in cottage pie provided youngsters with a foundation recipe which could be expanded to make other meals such as spaghetti bolognese, lasagne and chilli con carne.
He said as well as “stirring and chopping”, the Year 5 and 6 children enjoyed learning how to taste their food as they made it.
“The challenge now is to show to them how to do a shopping list, go shopping locally and cook with some support from home,” he said.
