A sign promising Sheppey’s new Morrisons store has been erected at Neats Court.

It will come as a welcome relief to Islanders who were unsure for months about what was happening after a rival developer launched a legal bid against the scheme.

Citygrove, which had hoped to build a supermarket on the former HBC Engineering site in Halfway, lodged its challenge in April to overturn the Neats Court development but withdrew it last month.

LXB Retail Properties, which is behind the £25m transformation of the Queenborough site, has said work is due to start later this month, and the store is expected to open in the spring next year.

The development also includes a petrol station, KFC drive-through and family pub and there are several other retail units available.

Firms including DIY giant B&Q, footwear retailer Brantano and home furnishings shop B&M Stores have all shown an interest – and Giles Haywood, from LXB, said conversations are still taking place with the companies.

It will create up to 600 jobs.

The sign has been put up at the Thomsett Way roundabout – where until recently there was a notice encouraging people to sign a petition calling for the legal action to be withdrawn.

Meanwhile, Citygrove chairman Toby Baines has said they are still “assessing all options” of how to proceed with the Power Station Road site.

Previously he said the primary focus is likely to be housing, but said it will take “some time” before a decision is made.
