Ryan Cottis fastest rider as Wigmore Cycling Club take Medway Towns Trophy win at Evening 10-mile time trial

Wigmore Cycling Club claimed a long fought-over trophy after bettering Medway Velo in an inter-club event last Wednesday.

The battle for the Medway Towns Trophy was combined with round 14 of the Wigmore CC Evening 10-mile time trial series on the Sheppey Way.

The trophy competition dates back many years to decide who has the strongest time trial team in Medway. The four fastest riders times are added together to establish the quickest team.

Medway Velo lifted the trophy last season but it was always going to be a tough ask to retain it this year, as they were up against a formidable Wigmore CC team including previous round winners Keith Walker, Ryan Cottis and Phil Appleby.

It was Cottis that stormed to victory for Wigmore with a very rapid 23mins11secs for the five, two-mile laps of Iwade. Team-mate Walker - the series leader - was just eight seconds down. There was a great return to form for Phil Appleby on the last step of the podium with 23.47.

The consistent Jamie Harris closed off the Wigmore team result with a season’s best time of 24.25 to take fourth.

Kieran Lawler was the fastest Medway Velo rider finishing in 25.34 to take ninth place with Mike Stanley in 10th, Rob Kennison 12th and Alex Cook finishing in 13th place to close off the Medway Velo CC quartet.

Kate Savage, still trying to get used to her new time trial bike, took the ladies trophy points with 27.23.
