Jake’s journey to Gills: From trials as a defender at Crewe – to Premier League Newcastle

Former Newcastle stopper Turner has kept five clean sheets this season in League 2, helping the side top the table.

He spoke ahead of the Doncaster game about his enjoyment this season.

Turner said: “I’m the last line of defence and I’m trying my best to keep the ball out of the net, probably not had loads of shots in the league but if I can stop them going in, that’s my job, the lads have been stopping the shots coming so I am enjoying it.”

Gills boss Neil Harris said: “We are delighted with Jake Turner extending his contract with the Football Club.

"Since coming in 15 months ago he has developed not just as a goalkeeper but as a character and personality in the changing room."

Turner started out in the academy at Bolton before moving to Newcastle United. He gained Football League experience at Morecambe and Colchester.

He joined the Gills in the summer of 2022, initially as an understudy to Morris, taking over in goal during injury spells for the no.1 stopper and always impressing.

He was also in goal during the club’s FA Cup and EFL Cup runs, playing against Premier League sides Brentford, Wolves and Leicester City.

When he came back for pre-season Harris made it clear the no.1 spot was up for grabs and he’s currently keeping the player-of-the-year Morris out of the side.
