A 20-year-old driver has died after a car hit a garden wall in Strood.

The man and three young passengers were in a black Renault Clio, pictured, when it left the road in Brompton Farm Road at 3.40am today.

The accident happened near the junction with Hyperion Drive as the car travelled towards Wainscott. No other cars were involved.

Police and ambulance crews attended and Strood firefighters had to cut the driver out of the car.

They spent 15 minutes freeing him using hydraulic cutting equipment and he was transferred to an ambulance.

Despite efforts by paramedics he died at the scene.

Two female passengers aged 18 and 21 were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries.

A male passenger aged 20 was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

The garden wall, also pictured, was completely destroyed in the crash, which is thought to have happened in thick fog.

It has not been established what caused the crash.

A police spokesman said: "A black Renault Clio car was travelling from the A226 towards Wainscott when it lost control and hit a brick wall."
