Police divert traffic from Rochester Bridge

Two police officers were hurt as they tried to arrest a man following a fight in a pub in Rochester High Street.

A male officer was taken to hospital for treatment to severe bruising and the second officer, a woman, suffered minor injuries but remained on duty.

A 37-year-old man was taken into police custody following the incident at around 5pm yesterday (Sunday).

The area, including Rochester Bridge, was sealed off while police investigated the incident, but the road was reopened at about 7pm.

Several police cars, an ambulance and a forensics crew gathered on the bridge as traffic was diverted down the Esplanade.

A spokesman for Medway police said: “A 37-year-old man from Strood was arrested a short while later on Rochester Bridge on suspicion of assault. He is still in police custody.”

Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or has information which may assist with their investigation, to come forward.
