Robbery in Canterbury Street, Gillingham, leads to arrest of man wanted on recall to prison

A man wanted on recall to prison was found when police investigated a robbery.

Officers were called just after 6.50pm on Saturday to reports of a robbery at a shop in Canterbury Street, Gillingham.

A 32-year-old man was later arrested in connection with the incident and was recalled to prison. Inquiries are ongoing.

Earlier the same day, at 9.31am, police were called to a report of a man with a suspected weapon in Chatham High Street.

Officers attended and searched the area, and Robert Smith of Luton Road, Chatham, was arrested.

The 36-year-old has been charged with possession of an imitation firearm and possession of cannabis.

He was bailed upon charge and is due to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, May 17.
