A man has been arrested after an electric wheelchair was stolen.

It was taken from outside an address in Junction Road, Gillingham, at around 1pm on Easter Sunday.

Officers have now returned the wheelchair to its owner, who requires it to move around independently.

The mother of the owner said: "She can't get the wheelchair in the house so left it outside, and she's visited before and done that before with no problems, although overnight it was taken."

The service which supplied the original wheelchair loaned a temporary manual transit one while the investigation was carried out.

The owner suffers from spinal muscle atrophy – leaving her completely reliant on the wheelchair.

Police spokesman Andy Saunders said: "On Monday evening, officers investigating the incident attended an address in the Chatham area, linked to a suspicious vehicle.

"The wheelchair was located in a nearby garage and a 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft."

The arrested man was released under investigation on April 7.
