Emma, who is a stay-at-home mum to Oliver, five, and Madeline, two, says the condition affects many parts of her life, which is why she wants to raise money awareness of it.

She said: "I think people are a bit blinkered about what it is and the seriousness of it.

"I have had it since I was four. My mum took me to the doctor because of my symptoms but they said that it was all normal.

"If it wasn't for my mum taking me to the hospital, I wouldn't be here."

Emma has to carry out four injections a day and undergo regular blood tests.

The Hardinge Close, Parkwood, Gillingham, resident said: "I have got two young children as well so I have got to keep it together for them."

Emma's June Jamboree, which will be held on Saturday, June 15 between 5pm and 10pm 8th Scout Headquarters, Edwards Close, Wigmore, near Fairview School.

The evening will include a quiz, bingo, raffle and music.

There will also be entertainment for the children provided by health and nutrition company Body Buddies.

The money raised will go towards Diabetes UK and the Sky Ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital, which has treated her friend Natasha Eaton's five-year-old son Thomas, who has scoliosis.

Emma said: "He will have to have a number of operations in his life, and this ward supports the family as well as the patient."

She would like to hear from businesses who can donate prizes to the raffle.

If you can spare any prizes, email Emma on emmahanshans@gmail.com.

She is also running a JustGiving page for anyone who wishes to donate towards her cause.
