Honour for Medway soldier

A soldier who was killed while trying to dismantle a bomb in Afghanistan has been awarded a posthumous honour.

It was announced today Captain Daniel Read, who grew up in Gillingham, is as to be given the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.

Cpt Read, who was serving as a high threat improvised explosive device (IED) disposal operator with 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps, was killed on January 11 this year.

The 31-year-old, who went to Rainham Mark Grammar School, is one of 131 members of the Armed Forces to be named on the Ministry of Defence's Operational Honours List.
