Health chiefs say plans in place to handle swine flu pandemic

Health chiefs in Medway say they are ready for cases of swine flu in the Towns.

Dr Alison Barnett, Medway Director of Public Health, in a statement issued earlier today, said:

Dr Alison Barnett, Medway Director of Public Health, said:"The World Health Organisation (WHO) has stepped up the state of alert for pandemic flu to Phase 5 (of 6).

"This means there has been human to human transmission in at least two countries.

“Evidence is that most people outside Mexico have so far experienced mild symptoms.

"It also appears that doses of antivirals such as Tamiflu, given quickly, are effective in helping people to recover.

“The UK is rated by the World Health Organisation as one of the best prepared countries in the world for a flu pandemic.

"We have developed plans that set out how the NHS in Medway will work with our partners at Medway Council to ensure that we are able to meet all the demands that could be placed on us in the event of a flu pandemic affecting local people."

Anyone who has recently returned from Mexico or another affected area, or who has been with someone who has, and who has flu-like symptoms should:

Stay at home and contact your GP or NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

Do not go to your GP's surgery or to hospital - they have no supplies of antivirals and doing this would delay your treatment and risk spreading the virus.
