Gillingham striker Mark McCammon keen to make a big impression on new boss Andy Hessenthaler

Mark McCammon is hoping a change in management will give him the chance to prove he can be a key player for Gillingham.

The big striker publicly fell out with previous manager Mark Stimson last season, after claiming he had been snubbed and was forced to train with the youth team but he’s now keen to start afresh.

McCammon (pictured), 31, said: "It was a horrible season. With not playing and the way I was treated, it was the worst of my career.

"It was hard to keep focus when things weren’t going my way. It wasn’t a bad season; it was terrible. I just had to try and keep my head up and keep going."

Former boss Stimson was never able to get the best out of McCammon, with injuries impeding the forward’s hopes, and the relationship between manager and player rapidly deteriorated.

It ended with McCammon issuing a statement last season at his displeasure of the way he was being handled.

McCammon’s last appearance for the Gills was in February and he spent the back end of last season on loan with Bradford.

He said: "It was a bad time in my career but I’m a strong enough character to put that behind me and get on with it.

"I’m fit and focused and it’s a fresh start for me now. I want to be able to show what I can do when I’m fit.

"I’ve had my injuries since I joined the club, with a hamstring and an ankle injury and I’ve never got into a rhythm of consecutive games.

"I’ve always been in and out and getting injured and it’s been up and down.

"When I get a run of games I know what I’m capable of.

"It was a stressful time last season and I did need the break but football wise I miss it so much because that’s what I enjoy.

"I eat, sleep and breathe football. I’m eager and excited to be back out there."
