West Ham United football club have issued an official statement following the death of dedicated fan Mick Ferris, who died in a freak accident in London on Tuesday.

Coach driver Mr Ferris, 53, from Hoo, was outside the 27-storey Corniche tower in Vauxhall, when he was struck by what is believed to be a window pane which fell 250ft from the newly built block.

The grandfather was pronounced dead at the scene.

An official statement from West Ham said: "Everyone at West Ham United is shocked and saddened by the sudden and tragic death of Mick Ferris, a lifelong Hammers fan.

"Our thoughts at this time are with Mr Ferris’s family and friends."

Many fans took to social media to express their sadness at the news, with some calling for the club to pay tribute to Mr Ferris by dedicating a match in his honour or arranging a minute's clap or silence.

TV star and Hammers fan James Corden has also spoke out following Mr Ferris' death, posting on Twitter: "I’m so saddened by the passing of Mick Ferris.

"He was a huge West Ham fan and has passed away in the most sudden of circumstances.

"My thoughts are with his family and everyone who knew him. None of us are promised tomorrow.

"Tell your loved ones you love them today."

Eyewitnesses described seeing "glass everywhere" at the scene next to the River Thames.

In a tribute on Facebook, Mick's son Daniel Ferris said: "Heartbroken isn't the world to describe how myself and the family feel.

"I love you so much dad and I'll think about you every day. My lifelong idol. Always in my heart and mind."

The Health and Safety Executive is making inquiries about the tragic accident, alongside the Met Police.
