Cheese on toast for mum sparks fire at home in Limetree Close, Chatham

A teenager doing a good deed of making some cheese on toast for his mum resulted a small fire in their kitchen.

Firefighters were called out to a home in Limetree Close, in Chatham, after the teenager successfully made the Welsh rarebit.

However, unfortunately he forgot to turn the grill off after he’d finished the dish and the grill pan in their cooker caught alight.

Crews from Medway and Rochester fire stations were called out to the property at about 3.40pm and found the pair outside the home unharmed.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: “It was an accidental fire and the grill was closed so the cooker is damaged but the fire didn’t spread to other parts of the house.

“The mum and her son did the right thing by turning off the gas and leaving their home.

“We were happy to go in and deal with the fire and were on the scene for about half an hour.”
