The Rochester and Cobham member helped England to a 9.5 - 5.5 victory over Ireland. This followed a win by a similar scoreline against Scotland on Wednesday.

Nineteen-year-old Haines (left), who will be making his Walker Cup debut against the United States in Pennsylvania next month, found himself three down to unbeaten Pat Murray in the early stages of yesterday's contest.

By the time the two men left the 11th green, Haines was back on level terms and he went ahead for the first time at the 13th before easing home 2 and 1.

In the opening game against Scotland on Wednesday, Haines beat fellow Walker Cup player Wallace Booth 3&2 in the singles and also earned half a point in the foursomes after he and Tommy Fleetwood finished all square with Gavin Dear and Keir McNicoll.

Today (Friday) the final matches see England play Wales and Scotland meet Ireland.
