Extinction Rebellion plans a "bike swarm" near M&S in Sevenoaks

The climate change protest group Extinction Rebellion is taking to the streets of Sevenoaks tomorrow - on their bicycles.

Local branch members are planning a "Bike Swarm" to protest against fossil fuel consumption.

Spokesman Laura Clout promised the demo would be "peaceful and colourful" and would act as a reminder of the movement after lockdown hibernation and ahead of a big protest starting in London next month, when thousands of XR members from across the country will picket Parliament Square for two weeks, from Wednesday.

The group is gathering in Bligh's Meadow, near the M&S store in Sevenoaks at 6pm, before swarming through the town centre.

The protestors will be socially distanced and participants have been asked to wear face masks.

Co-ordinator Alexia Hall said: “We want to draw attention to the over-reliance on cars in our town, and ask the council to provide viable and safe alternatives.

"We’d like to see safe cycle lanes, a pedestrianised high street, cycle routes for kids to get to school, shared bike schemes and more places to secure bikes."

Ms Hall said: “We are facing a climate emergency which threatens all our futures. Towns like ours must do everything within their power to limit the burning of fossil fuels now.

“We are heading for a planet that is four degrees warmer by the end of the century and this is not simply compatible with human life as we know it.

“Banners, bicycles and bells might seem insignificant, but deeds speak louder than words ... and there is no time to lose.”

Extinction Rebellion members will be back in Sevenoaks on Saturday handing out leaflets and singing in the town centre.
