Hands on plan for West Malling's Lobster Pot

A new Italian restaurant is being planned for West Malling in the building previously occupied by a popular pub.

A mano, meaning “by hand” in Italian, is the brainchild of Nick Levantis, owner of The Swan in Swan Street, and he hopes to open his new venture in the former Lobster Pot building, in the same road.

A planning application has been submitted for the restaurant, which would also have four en suite hotel rooms on the first floor and, if permission is granted, Mr Levantis hopes to open in just over six months.

He said: “A mano will be a modern and inviting Italian restaurant. Our designer Alice Adamczewski, together with Chalk Architects, has created this wonderful open dining area with approximately 75 seats, which will provide both privacy and the right atmosphere for everyone.

“The restaurant will feel bright and airy during the day and warm and cosy in the evening. The simplicity of the design detail is so elegant and timeless."

Mr Levantis said: “A mano will have a neighbourhood friendly feel in both food and service. Our Italian head chef Fabio Moschini will create a menu of homemade pastas, wood fired pizzas, a selection of seafood dishes and cured meats and much more familiar Italian cooking. Simple cooking and real Italian ingredients will be the focus.”

Its management team, headed by David Benavent, is in place and preparing for the opening in February.

An orangery-style terrace will be built onto the back of the building while exposed brickwork, quirky lighting and striking artwork are planned inside.

The Lobster Pot had several owners – opening and closing several times in recent years – and was known as a live music venue.

The Swan serves modern cuisine and has dining rooms and cocktail and lounge bars.
