Lewis, 30, becomes a dad for the first time next month and has taken stock of his career.

He said: “It’s with a heavy heart that I’ll be leaving Maidstone.

“I’ve not taken the decision lightly but it’s something I’ve got to do for myself and my family.

“I’ve had great times at Maidstone, memories that will stay with me throughout my life.

“Some of the highlights of my career have happened at Maidstone and the fans have been brilliant to me.

“To captain them has been a massive achievement but I’ve just come to the decision that I feel the time is right to move on.

“I’ve done that for professional and personal reasons, to do with my family.

“My missus is obviously expecting, I’ve got to do what’s best for us and that’s how it’s got to be.”

Lewis kept the captain’s armband under Harry Wheeler but has found it tough since Jay Saunders’ departure.

He said: “I was Jay’s captain and it’s been a tough time with him going.

“It’s been a difficult period for the club, something I’ve been part of as well.

“Jay’s been brilliant for me and is someone I hold in high regard.

“It has been difficult with the change of manager but that’s nothing against Harry.

“I wish the club and Harry all the best in the future.

“I’ve got to go on to new challenges and new things ahead.”
