Scott then stabbed him with a knife four times causing cuts to his face and arms before leaving.

Bystanders rushed to give the injured man, who was in his 20s, first aid and he was taken to hospital.

Police officers attended the scene and security staff identified Scott and provided a CCTV image to assist in the search. He was found nearby in Pudding Lane shortly after and he was charged.

The weapon the 24-year-old had used in the assault was also retrieved from where he had left it in Earl Street.

Scott, of Wantage Road, Reading, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court and was sentenced to 21 months' imprisonment yesterday (November 2) after pleading guilty to wounding.

Detective Constable Kim Bashford, of Maidstone CID, said: “A young man who was enjoying a night out with friends suffered injuries after coming into contact with a man who had deliberately armed himself with a knife.

“It is only by chance the victim did not suffer fatal wounds and I would like to commend those who gave first aid until paramedics arrived at the scene.

“Patrols were greatly assisted by security staff who ensured the violent criminal who inflicted the injuries was swiftly detained and ultimately brought to justice.

“He is now serving a prison sentence and those who consider carrying bladed weapons should be left in no doubt that they are likely to suffer the same consequences.”

The road is home to the nightclub Source Bar which is open on Saturdays between 10pm and 6am.
