Stricter tip controls not the answer

Stricter controls on the rubbish tipped at Tovil Waste Recycling Centre are a step in the wrong direction.

That is the view of South Ward borough councillor Mike Hogg.

From July Kent County Council is planning to ban vans, horse-boxes and tall vehicles from delivering to the site in a bid to prevent commercial dumpers.

But the restrictions, which include limiting domestic customers to no more than three bags of construction waste at a time, were likely to add to pressure on the already over-busy tip, claims Cllr Hogg.

He said: “At busy times traffic already queues in both directions up Burial Ground Lane, sometimes even out on to Farleigh Hill.”

Cllr Hogg said this is a danger to other drivers using the roads.
He said: “KCC needs to make it easier to use the recycling centre, not more difficult.”

He also predicts the changes could to lead to an increase in fly-tipping.
n The issue will be discussed by Tovil Parish Council at its next meeting on Monday, June 11.
