Shopping gridlock hits Maidstone

Shoppers have faced two-hour queues to pay for their goods at some shops in Maidstone today.

One of the stores affected was Marks and Spencer in Week Street. One woman who phoned the Kent Messenger said her grandson was in the store four and a half hours while trying to make his purchases.

Elsewhere there were reports of some shops having to temporarily close their doors, while queues were managed.

It seemed it was those trying to complete their shopping around 10am and 1pm who were worst affected.

One possible theory is that it is not just those who have left it to the last minute flooding the town, but that others have been given today's date for food and drink ordered in advance.
