A school is renaming its performing arts studio in honour of a student who died earlier this year.

Cornwallis Academy, in Maidstone, will be formally calling the building The Goodsell Studio to remember Caitlin Goodsell who passed away on April 1.

The 17-year-old was born with an extremely complicated and life-threatening heart condition which was only discovered when she was eight weeks old.

Throughout her life, she suffered two strokes, had numerous operations starting from a young age and had a heart transplant.

Her parents, Barry and Ingrid Goodsell, have since paid tribute to their “brave” and “determined” daughter and explained they are trying to “always do the incredible” to keep her memory alive.

And her secondary school, in Hubbard's Lane, Loose, has since revealed how it too will remember her.

Spokesman Mason Dadson said: “Caitlin was one of our most resilient students who, throughout her life, overcame many challenges.

“Working with Caitlin’s family, we are looking to celebrate her life, ensuring Caitlin’s legacy lives on at Cornwallis Academy.

“Firstly, Caitlin was a lover of performing arts and took part in all the school performances she was able to. Our performing arts studio will formally become The Goodsell Studio on October 11 at our annual awards evening, when Ingrid and Barry will open the re-named studio.

“Secondly, The Caitlin Goodsell Performance Award, for outstanding achievement despite adversity, will be awarded in Caitlin’s name to one of our student award winners who has done just that, achieved despite adversity. With Caitlin’s family financing an appropriate award for the winner.

“Finally, we will be planting a memorial tree in our school garden, surrounded by the plant seeds given out by Caitlin’s family at her funeral.

“Caitlin was an inspiration to many. We hope what we are doing as a school reflects this to those outside of our fantastic, strong and close-knit community.”

Mr Dadson added the school will also be looking to provide some in-school tributes to student Kieran Bryne who died at the start of July.

Kieran, 15, passed away in Heath Road, Coxheath, after his e-scooter collided with a BMW.

The school will be liaising with his family on how best to remember him.
