Pensioner dies after crash

A Pensioner has died after he was hit by a car on Saturday night.

The man, who has not yet been named and said to be in his 70s, was walking along Philpots Lane in Hildenborough when the accident happened at about 6pm.

He was taken to Kings College Hospital in London after the accident, in a critical condition.

But he passed away earlier today.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident which is believed to have happened by a bridge at the junction of Egg Pie Lane.

The man, who is thought to be local, was struck by a blue Volkswagen Polo.

Ambulance crews were called after reports a man was lying unconscious at the side of the road.

A resident who lives close to the accident spot described the scene as she looked out of her window and saw "blue flashing lights" through the early evening gloom.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said: "I was drawing the curtains when I saw all the lights.

"I’ve lived here for 50 years and there have been a few minor traffic accidents at that spot.

"It’s a long road, but it narrows at that point so when I saw the emergency services I wasn’t too surprised."

Philpots Lane remained closed for more than six hours while crash investigators examined the scene. The road reopened at 12.30am.

Any witnesses are asked to call Kent Police’s Serious Collision Unit on 01622 798538.
