Maidstone: High-rise rubbish mountain at Shipley Court in Wyatt Street forces man to leave home

A man left his home because of the stink from an out-of-control rubbish mound at a block of flats in Maidstone.

In May, the Kent Messenger reported how a towering pile of waste had not been cleared for two months at Shipley Court in Wyatt Street.

The refuse has once again been overflowing and caused Vincent Gurr to stay with a relative.

The 21-year-old, who lives on the ground floor with his mother Pauline, says the collection of bin bags is making him ill.

As well as black sacks, furniture, mattresses and even dirty nappies were dumped by the building.

He said: “My mother’s bedroom is right next to it and she can’t open the windows because of the smell, which is really bad especially in the warm weather.

“It has been like it for three weeks and getting worse by the day. The smell really affects me and makes me feel sick and unwell.

“It is a mix of rotting food and human waste in dirty nappies.

“There is even excrement on the floor. We’ve told Hyde Housing about it and so have a lot of the residents but nothing has been done. It is awful.”

He added: “I think it is a mixture of residents leaving things there as well as people coming from elsewhere in vans in the night and dumping things.”

Mr Gurr has lived in the property for 14 years, but decided to stay with his grandmother in Coxheath while the problem is sorted.

Hyde’s head of housing, Ben Bello, said contractors removed some of the rubbish on Monday, with a full clean expected to be completed on Thursday, July 16.

CCTV has been installed and residents have been warned action will be taken against anyone caught dumping rubbish.

Mr Bello said Hyde officers had discussed fly-tipping with Maidstone council and urged people with concerns to contact housing officers.
