Former Maidstone defender Chris Smalling has completed a dream move to Manchester United.

The 20-year-old, who was only playing in the Ryman League for Maidstone two years ago, has agreed to leave Premier League Fulham to make the switch to Old Trafford.

Arsenal were also reported to be interested in signing Smalling, pictured, who has made just nine first-team appearances for Fulham.

Manchester United confirmed on Tuesday afternoon: "Manchester United has agreed terms for the transfer of Chris Smalling from Fulham.

"Chris has agreed personal terms with the club and will join for the beginning of the 2010/2011 campaign. He will remain at Fulham until the end of the current season."

Maidstone will be delighted that Smalling is remaining at Craven Cottage on loan for the rest of the season. Fulham have already made a four-figure donation after signing Smalling, who was not under contract as he was playing for England schoolboys.

But Fulham agreed to make a further payment to the Stones once Smalling - a former pupil at Chatham Grammar School for Boys, made 10 first-team apperances.

The England under-21 international has earned rave reviews for his performances at the top level, and the transfer fee is reported to be in the region of £8million.
