The battle cries may have died down, but a piece of music commemorating the Battle of Maidstone will be heard for the first time this weekend.

The Cavaliers and Roundheads (Battle of Maidstone), commissioned for the 360th annniversary of the historic battle and composed by band member Richard Hubbert, will be performed by Maidstone Winds at the Friars, Aylesford, on Saturday.

The piece will open the band’s 10th anniversary concert in the North Barn, at 7.30pm.

Maidstone Winds’ musical director Jeremy Cooper will share conducting duties with the band’s founder Brendon le Page, and with Jeffrey Vaughan Martin in recognition of the contribution he has made to music in Maidstone.

The concert is also raising money for the Heart of Kent Hospice, and a grant from Maidstone council means all proceeds can be donated.

The concert begins at 7.30pm. Tickets priced £6 (£5 concessions, under 16s go free) are available by calling 01732 365698.

The concert is the first event in the Maidstone Music Festival. See Friday's KM for details.
