MEMBERS of the public were allowed back into a Maidstone shopping centre this afternoon following reports of a suspected gas leak.

At around 8.50am a strong smell of gas was reported at the Mall Chequers in the town centre, in the area of the Arriva bus depot.

The centre was completely evacuated while gas board officials attended the scene to secure the suspected leak. The centre was declared safe at around 12.20pm.
