Yorkshire v Kent day two

Tykes’ batsman Jacques Rudolph received a standing ovation from a 4,000 Scarborough crowd for scoring a brilliant 146 and helping Yorkshire to reach 409-7 - a lead of 182 at the mid-point of this Scarborough Festival Week Championship match.

Rudolph went in the mid-session after a 221-ball stay with 21 fours, falling to the fifth over with the second new ball after chopping on an attempted drive onto his own stumps against Robbie Joseph.

He had lost his third wicket partner Anthony McGrath just after lunch for 52 when he edged a Ryan McLaren leg cutter through to Geraint Jones.

Then, just before tea, Gerard Brophy (14) snicked a Darren Stevens away-swinger to Martin van Jaarsveld at second slip.

Scarborough lad Adam Lyth went after the tea break for a stylish 68, caught at the wicket off an edged drive against Martin Saggers.

Then, just before the close, Rana Naved (10) edged to James Tredwell at slip, but Adil Rashid (43) and Darren Gough (12) took advantage of perfect batting conditions and a tiring Kent attack to add a quick-fire 36 through to stumps.

Afterwards Kent paceman Martin Saggers said: “Personally it was nice for me to get out there and bowl a long spell and eventually find an edge to get rid of Lyth.

“It was hard work for us for sure because the cloudy conditions of the first day disappeared as soon as we had to bowl, but I felt we bowled quite well today in good batting conditions and had a few other edges carried to the slip and keeper we might have been much better off.”
