Wings safe despite defeat

Sutton United 1 Welling United 0

WELLING were beaten by another late goal but results elsewhere ensured their Conference South status for another season.

Sutton, who kept themselves up by claiming the three points, scored the winner three minutes from time when veteran Joff Vansittart headed in a left-wing corner.

It was the home side's only attempt on target in the 90 minutes.

Welling's misery was complete two minutes later when left-back Ian Wiles was harshly red carded for an apparent professional foul, despite the presence of a covering defender.

The best chance of the first half fell to Daniel Talbot but his right-foot volley went staright at keeper Andy Iga.

Welling failed to keep possession and eventually paid the ultimate price.
