Welling United 2 Barkingside 1

WELLING made hard work of seeing off battling Essex League Barkingside in the FA Cup second qualifying round at Park View Road on Saturday.

The Wings raced into a 2-0 lead but were left hanging on after Barkingsaide had the better of the chances.

Chris Moore headed Welling ahead after 12 minutes from Marlon Patterson's cross.

He then headed wide a similar opportunity before striker Ross Montague headed in to round off a sweet passing move involving Leon Solomon and Adam Cottrell in the 26th minute.

Barkingside were fortunate not to have striker Mark Steadman sent off nine minutes before the break as his lunge at Robbie Ryan was punished only with a yellow card.

In the second half Barkingside gave themselves a glimmer of hope when Steadman forced the ball in from close range but they then failed to make Welling keeper Jamie Turner make a save for the rest of the game.

Paul Kavanagh saw his 25-yard free-kick deflected over and while Barkingside pushed Welling back for long periods the lacked sufficient quality to earn themselves a replay.
