Last gasp Wings rescue point

EQUALISER: Jamie Day
EQUALISER: Jamie Day

Newport County 2 - 2 Welling United

JAMIE Day's injury-time free-kick handed Welling a point at Newport County on Wednesday night.

Day fired home from 20 yards beyond home keeper Tony Pennock two minutes into time added on.

The Wings had been on the backfoot since falling behind on 18 minutes when Pennock's long clearance caught Barry Ashby on his heels and Matt Green turned and fired home from 25 yards.

Newport's Gary Fisken twice went close before skipper Jason Bowen saw his shot deflected wide as the home side piled on the pressure.

Welling, who fielded new signing Keith Rowland in an injury-hit side, regained the initative after the break but not before Craig Hughes had missed a golden opportunity to extend Newport's lead.

The Wings equalised on 67 minutes when Day's near post corner was missed by Rob Owen and deflected in off a defender, although Welling boss Adrian Pennock later credited Day with the goal.

Welling, despite being without injured top scorer Danny Kedwell, should have gone on and won the game. Instead, an embarrassing error by Ashby saw him score an own goal as his backpass went straight past the onrushing Jamie Turner and put Newport ahead with 15 minutes to go.

Welling's hopes of claiming a point appeared to have ended in the 89th minute when James Pinnock fired against the crossbar but Day had other ideas when he fired home an unstoppable free-kick.

Welling: Turner, Gledhill, Solomon, Ashby, C Moore, Rowland, Owen, Bodkin (D Moore 61), Pinnock, Stadhart, Day.
Subs Not Used: Green, Ibrahim, Pennock.
Attendance: 602.
