Knock-out night of boxing

MEDWAY Golden Gloves Boxing Club are preparing for an entertaining evening of boxing in an open show at the George Hotel in New Road, Chatham, tonight.

The event, which includes boxers all over the South, is expected to be one of the most competitive in recent weeks.

The show costs £10 for adults, £5 for children, as early as possible if they want to see all 12 bouts.

One of the main attractions is Ricky Rose, who comes into the competition with confidence sky high after an excellent unanimous points verdict over previously unbeaten Jack Johnson a couple of weeks ago. Doors open at 6.30pm.

Another fighter in good touch is Mark Wright who, after impressing his trainers with his work in the gym, boxes in the 60kg category.

Danny Shannon is expected to have a good bout, while Michael Foord, Tom Neenan, Tony Shearer and Ben Tebbut are also in action.

The only senior fighter from the Chatham club on the night is Ady Harris who faces a 62kg showdown.

Meanwhile, St Mary’s ABC fighters warmed up for their show on Friday, May 31, with bouts at the Ramsgate Show, held at the Margate’s Winter Gardens.

Jordan Hicks, 12, made an impressive debut with a points win over Billy Morgan of West Ham in the 29kg category.

Stan Worthing, 12, beat L Unsworthy (Danson Youth) on points in the 36kg section after giving his opponent a standing count in the first round and picked up the Best Boxer of the Night Award.

Jamie Gatehouse, 13, in his second bout, stopped S Ransom (Thamesmead ABC) in the first round and Lewis Carter (15) won his debut bout against S Wisdom (Danson Youth) in the 45kg section. But Jamie Laird, 13, lost on a majority to R Brand (Southwick).

The club's show, being held at the George Hotel, New Road, Chatham, will feature around 20 bouts.

The price on the door is £13 for adults and £8 children. That includes a chicken and chips supper and a disco. Boxing starts at 7.30pm.
