Spitfires' opening batsman Joe Denly was the toast of Kent on Tuesday night for a sparkling innings of 98 that inspired a record 142-run away win over Surrey.

Denly received a magnum of Champagne after being named man-of-the-match in a one-sided NatWest Pro40 clash under lights at the Brit Oval.

Denly said: "It's been a pretty good year, I've enjoyed our one-day cricket this year and if I can finish the season with a few more runs in championship cricket, it will be nice.

"Our aim now is promotion in this because we missed out in the Friends Provident Trophy and Twenty20 finals, so we're keen to win one one-day competition and keep pushing for the county championship as well."

Victorious Kent skipper and Denly's opening partner, Rob Key, said: "I always think it's quite a big toss to win in day-night cricket here at The Oval because it's good to bat first when the sun's out.

"I thought 'Jarre' and Joe batted really well. They looked class acts and were both pretty unselfish to keep going for runs rather than just bat through for their hundreds.

"After that, Robbie Joseph and Amjad Khan, our two young opening bowlers, did really well for us again and I'd like to see them both on a tour at some stage."

As for Surrey skipper Mark Ramprakash, whose side have now missed their chance of promotion, he said: "I think we came third tonight, it wasn't a great performance. But credit to Kent, they batted very well."
