Doncaster Rovers 1 Gillingham 2

GILLINGHAM manager Ronnie Jepson admitted it had been a battle on Saturday after a bruising encounter at Doncaster.

The Gills returned home with maximum points but they did it the hard way after surviving a Doncaster onslaught for almost an hour with 10 men.

"It was a battle at times, they put plenty of stuff in our box but I thought we defended admirably," said Jepson, after his side completed their first League 1 win since the opening day of the season.

Gillingham had Danny Jackman sent off in the 33rd minute but a gritty defensive performance and a poor Rovers attacking display helped Jepson’s men earn three points.

Defender Brent Sancho was forced off with a knee injury at half-time, Ian Cox suffered a blow to the head and Duncan Jupp also received a head injury and landed awkwardly on his arm.

Jepson said: "You think everything’s against you and the lads could have hidden behind that. But they didn’t and to a man they stuck to the task and we’re grateful for the three points."
