RAINHAM snooker star Gerard Greene will be looking to cause a major upset as he takes on defending champion Peter Ebdon when the first round of the Embassy World Championships in Sheffield gets under way tomorrow.

Greene, provisionally ranked 41 for next season, will be looking to show the kind of form that has seen him shoot up the rankings, in the best-of-19-frame match.

This is the second time Greene, who is a 150-1 shot to win the title alongside Jimmy White, has faced the reigning champion. He took on the then champion John Higgins in 1999 in his only other appearance at The Crucible and lost 10-2.

But Greene has had a fantastic season thus far and is gunning for Ebdon who has had a poor season by his standards.

Greene said: "I'm definitely looking forward to it. Peter's not been playing that well this season and he's going to be under a lot of pressure as the defending champion.

“I'm playing okay at the moment and it all depends on the day but I'm quietly confident and if I win I'll play either Tony Drago or Joe Swail in the next round so it's a pretty good draw.”
