Gillingham manager Mark Stimson has revealed his latest transfer target is Brentford’s Glenn Poole – but admits signing him could be tough.

The Gills had an offer rejected for the Bees midfielder on Sunday and he was back in the squad for their win at Grimsby on Tuesday night.

Poole, who played for Stimson at Grays, remained on the bench for the league leaders, but the Gills boss knows it could be tough to persuade Brentford to let him go.

Stimson said: “We’ll ask the question every day and hopefully they will get bored of me and they will say you can have him. He wants to come and he’s interested, through his agent, and we’ll see what happens.

“On Friday I was told he was available and then on Sunday when someone made the call for me to do the deal they said no.”

Left-sided midfielder Poole was Brentford’s top scorer last season but has recently been left out of the side and Stimson was quick to make his interest known.

“If he comes to us he’ll add what we lack in midfield,” said the Gills boss.

“He’s been a very good player for me. I tried to sign him from Grays to Stevenage but obviously Brentford came in. They were a league side and he did the right thing.

“He’s someone who is capable of getting a goal in midfield and probably a bit like Nicky Southall, very good at set pieces, and he would be a good addition but if he has got back in the squad then that door might close.”

Stimson also revealed that he looked at bringing Lloyd Owusu to the club. The 32-year-old striker moved from cash-strapped Cheltenham to Brighton this week.

“I was interested in him and unfortunately we missed out there,” said Stimson.
