Have your say: Gillingham put Antonio German, Chris Whelpdale, Charlie Lee and Steven Gregory on the transfer list

On Friday afternoon Gills boss Martin Allen announced that he was transfer-listing four of his team.

Chris Whelpdale, Charlie Lee, Steven Gregory and Antonio German have all been told they can leave.

Gillingham are without a win all season and Allen has made the move to create room in his transfer budget.

With the window for permanent transfers now closed, the Gills will need to utilise the loan market to do their business.

Allen said: “I need to make some changes; I need to add some players and the group needs to be freshened up. I have also told all of the others that after Sunday’s game I will look next week with a view to be making potential possible future changes.

“The logic behind that is that we need to raise some money to improve our team, it’s as simple as that.”

The transfer-listed four;

Chris Whelpdale

Whelpdale arrived at Priestfield permanently under former manager Andy Hessenthaler, having previously enjoyed a brief loan spell. He has made 101 appearances for the club and scored 22 goals. He has been included in all of Gillingham’s games this season and played over 40 league games during the championship season.

Charlie Lee

Lee was first transfer listed in the summer but failed to complete a move to Southend. He recently insisted he was happy at the Gills and wanted to see out the remainder of his contract, which expires at the end of this season. He was sent off last weekend and the former Peterborough man has made 84 appearances for the club.

Summer signing German first came to the Gills last season, with a brief loan stint from Brentford, before being recalled. Allen made him a permanent signing in the summer but he has been down the pecking order, following the arrivals of Cody McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa. His only two starts this season have come in cup competitions.

Steven Gregory

The former AFC Wimbledon and Bournemouth midfielder was signed by Martin Allen in the middle of last season. He has been a regular since his arrival at Priestfield and has started all eight of Gillingham’s games this season. The 26-year-old has played 25 games for the Gills in total.
