KENT boxer Johnny Armour has announced his intention to return to the ring in a bid to regain his world title.

Armour hasn’t been in action since losing on points to Frenchman Tuncay Kaya in June – but the 37-year-old has made it clear that the controversial defeat was not his last fight.

The former WBU world champion has parted company with trainer Terry Colter and is working hard to get in shape for a possible title bid next year.

He is due to meet with boxing promoter Eugene Maloney next week with a view to joining his Fight Factory stables and has his sights set for a return to action early in the New Year.

Chatham-based Armour, who is currently working for a gas company, said: “If it all works out with Eugene Maloney hopefully I will have a six-round fight early next year and then be looking for a title bout.

“Whether that’s a fight for a World, European or British belt I don’t know at this stage, but I still believe I have it in me to fight at the top level.

“I am in great shape at the moment, just as good as I’ve ever been. I’ve sorted my diet out and I’ve cut out drinking completely. I wish I had done all that when I was younger because I feel so much sharper.

“I’ve got nothing left to prove but I still feel I have it in me to go for a title and want to give it one more shot.”
