Adebayo Akinfenwa admits he’s had to change his game since rejoining the Gills.

The 31-year-old, who started on Saturday in the defeat against Bradford, has had to muck in with the defending this season under boss Martin Allen – and it’s not something he’s used to.

Akifenwa, speaking before the weekend, said: “The gaffer has done stuff this season that has taken me time to try and get my head around and to adapt.

“But every day is a learning day and you have to try and take the positives out of everything that happens.

“Defending from the front, especially for myself, involves a lot more running but they (Gillingham) won the league with a good defensive record last season and the gaffer is big on that.

“It’s a new thing for me as I do like to stay further up the pitch and have my battle with the centre-half, whereas now he is trying to implement a new tactical formation into my game.”

During his previous stint with the Gills, Akinfenwa was a regular starter but he’s having to adapt to a rotation policy under Allen. It was his fifth league start of the season against Bradford.

He added: “Everyone wants to play but I spoke to the gaffer when I first came here and he is big on rotation.

“I am eager to get on the pitch and play minutes but we have got top strikers here and it does keep everyone on their toes. Once we get that first win, I am sure we will go on.”
