Van blaze claims life of 'kind, gentle' man

FARM workers have spoken of their shock at the death of a man in what appears to have been a tragic accident.

Andrew Bell, 42, of Howland Road, Marden, became trapped in the back of a burning van at the edge of an orchard while visiting fruit-picking friends.

The tragedy, at Flightshott Farm, Brenchley, happened early last Sunday morning as the pickers were preparing to go to bed after holding a bonfire party. Floriane Periera, a picker from France who has worked at the farm, in Spouts Lane, for two years, said: "It was horrible and everyone was so shocked."

On Wednesday morning, floral tributes, a poem and cards had been left at the site of the blaze. One tribute said: "Find your way, Andy", while another said: "We love you Andy and will always remember the kind, gentle, loving man."
