Turn out to cheer our Sapper heroes

Cheer loudly and make it a day to remember.

That’s the message to everyone in Medway as the Royal Engineers prepare to celebrate being awarded the Freedom of the Borough.

About 600 Sappers , accompanied by the Corps of Royal Engineers band, will march through Brompton on Saturday before receiving the honour.

Crowds are expected to line the route of the march, along Dock Road, Chatham.

The march starts at 11am, from Kitchener Barracks, down Khartoum Road and right at the Kitchener statue into Dock Road.

Medway Mayor Cllr David Carr and the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Allan Willett, will take the salute outside the council’s new headquarters at Gun Wharf.

The march will continue up Dock Road to finish at Brompton Barracks.

At about noon the mayor will formally present a scroll and casket, conferring the freedom, to Gen Sir Kevin O’Donoghue, the Chief Royal Engineer. The ceremony will take place at a reception for invited guests in a marquee on the lawn alongside the Gun Wharf offices.

During the march, Dock Road will be closed to all traffic between 10.45am and 11.45am, as will Wood Street from Dock Road to its junction with Prince Arthur Road Chatham. Diversions will signposted.
