Storm Katie: Kent picks up the pieces after gales batter county

A trail of damage has been left across the county in the wake of Storm Katie.

This afternoon the winds, which reached 70mph at their peak, were subsiding but left behind are dozens of fallen trees and damaged roofs and property.

Several cars were also hit by trees but there are no reported injuries.

Thousands of homes throughout Kent are still without power after electricity cables were brought down. UK Power Networks says it is working flat out to restore supplies.

Bank Holiday traffic continues to suffer despite the re-opening of the QEII Dartford crossing at 2.50pm with long tailbacks on the M25 .

Southeastern says it is running a full service though many of its trains are behind schedule.

But ferry services resumed out of Dover at lunchtime, the port having been closed this morning.

The gales were accompanied by heavy rain earlier this morning which flooded some roads, making them impassable.

Firefighters were called to numerous incidents to make property safe.
